Thought #8                                                               January 2009

Some Thoughts about The 2009 Stimulus Plan

I have attached a spreadsheet that has the state spending part of the 2009 Stimulus Package. If you click on the name of each state, you will be linked to a site that will list each state project and information about that project.

Also included is the number of state projects, total spending by state, labor force by state, unemployment by state, and spending per employed citizen in each state.

Some thoughts:

  1. Our government spent lots of time in order to loan our 3 auto makers a few billion dollars. Why is it so important to act so quickly to give over $150 billion dollars to the states? Do we want our representatives in Washington to approve this Plan before reading and discussing it?
  2. As you can see, there are 17,171 projects for our representatives in the House of Representatives and Senate to review and determine the value of each project. If our representative, or a delegate of the representative, was to read and make a decision on each project every 5 minutes, it would take over half a year (working 8 hours a day) to review just this part of the package.
  3. Please notice how much money we (the people reading this Thought) are going to give to Puerto Rico? Over $22 Billion. That's over $16,000 for each person of their work force. That's 3 times more then we gave our auto companies.
  4. We must be rich and prosperous to be spending like this!
